Instagram Stories: What you need to know

Instagram has released a new feature called Instagram Stories. Here’s what you need to know:

As reported on the Instagram blog, “With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want. You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.”

Share your ‘less than perfect’ photos

Unlike the regular Instagram, which is focused on creating high quality content that glamorizes a particular moment, Instagram stories will give you a chance to share lots of less than perfect photos, telling an overall story rather than just one part of an exciting event or moment.

Instagram Stories is a “Brazen Rip-off” of Snapchat Stories, according to Wired

Wired said the new Instagram feature is a rip-off of Snapchat’s stories feature. And according to TechCrunch, it’s almost a Pixel by Pixel copy of Snapchat Stories. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom even admitted as much, saying Snapchat deserves all the credit.

“You’ll see stories from people you follow in a bar at the top of your feed — from your best friends to your favorite popular accounts. When there’s something new to see, their profile photo will have a colorful ring around it.”

This is Facebook’s response to the rejection of their offer to buy Snapchat

Snapchat Stories has a new competitor: Instagram Stories.
Snapchat: Brayan D.D.

In 2014, Facebook tried to buy Snapchat for $3 billion. Snapchat rejected the offer.

Instagram Stories will allow Instagram (owned by Facebook), to compete directly with Snapchat, and Facebook’s immense financial and technological resources will be a big challenge for Snapchat in the years to come.

Instagram Stories will roll out over the next few months across the globe.
