Parents of Anton Yelchin file wrongful death suit against Fiat Chrysler

The parents of Anton Yelchin – the rising Star Trek star who died when his Jeep rolled back and pinned him against a wall – have filed a wrongful death suit against the manufacturer, Fiat Chrysler.

Yelchin was mailed a recall notice for his Jeep Grand Cherokee seven days after he died.

Irina Yelchina and Victor Yelchin filed the suit in Los Angeles.

“In spite of our unbelievable grief, we decided to come here to prevent other families from the same tragedy,” Anton’s father Victor Yelchin said. “Anton was our only son, and he was a remarkable human being — very modest, very simple, very honest, generous, loving.”

Fiat Chrysler had recalled 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee a month before the accident

Here is the text of the recall notice:

“Your vehicle may roll away, striking and injuring you, your passengers, or bystanders, if the vehicle’s engine is left running, the parking brake is not engaged, and the transmission is not in the “PARK” position before exiting the vehicle.

Drivers may inadvertently fail to achieve the “PARK” position before exiting the vehicle. The electronic shift lever in your vehicle does not move like a conventional shifter. Your shift lever is spring-loaded and returns to the same center position like a joystick, always returning to the center position after the desired gear is selected.”

Sadly, that is what happened to Yelchin. He had parked his Jeep and walked behind it when it rolled back and pinned him against a wall.

Yelchin’s parents want Fiat Chrysler to be held accountable. Their lawyer Gary Dordick says, “We hope this lawsuit will teach them a lesson.”

This is a tragic story all around. Yelchin’s parents have lost their son, and the world has lost a talented and promising actor.
