Trudeau Says He Won’t Stop Border Crossings

Justin Trudeau has said he won’t take steps to stop the flow of individuals from the United States claiming refugee status in Canada.

Said Trudeau, “One of the reasons why Canada remains an open country is Canadians trust our immigration system and the integrity of our borders and the help we provide people who are looking for safety.”

Trudeau made the comments in Parliament, and while he promised to do more to secure the border, few actual details were provided.

The number of asylum seekers has increased dramatically from the United States. For example, 452 people made refugee claims in Quebec in January 2017, a big jump from the 137 in the same month of 2016.

Trudeau has faced criticism for the lax security at the border, which has become overwhelmed and unable to manage the influx. Additionally, settlement organizations are facing overcapacity issues.

While nobody expects our border with a friendly ally like the United States to be militarized, there is a potential danger in having so little idea who is crossing into Canada.

With his statements, Trudeau will create an even greater incentive for more people to attempt the dangerous journey, and will increase the burden on the border even more.
