China Increasing Military Budget By 7%

China has announced yet another increase in the budget for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Funding will go up by 7%, continuing almost 20 years of spending increases.

China is now considered to have the second most powerful military on earth, behind only the United States.

Many of China’s democratic neighbors are worried about the growing military power of the communist Chinese state. Particularly the new ships China is building to enforce their (often illegal) territorial claims in the South China Sea.

China has increased the aggressiveness of those claims, and have expanded their building of artificial islands in the region – many of which are being stocked with weapons.

In response, Japan’s last military budget was the highest in their history, as fears of China’s intentions grow.

Wake-up call

The Western world has to wake-up and realize that China is dead serious about attaining more global power. We cannot afford to sit back and let our own defenses weaken as China’s military grows. Canada is not immune to threats and intimidation, and that means we must strengthen our own military to create a more level playing field.

China’s leaders certainly understand that military power equals influence in today’s world. Canada’s leaders must stop being so naive and realize the same thing.

China is not our friend, and Canada must become a stronger nation to protect our place in the world.
