Today is Earth Day. It’s a day where people will reflect on the beauty of our planet, and share thoughts on the importance of respecting our environment.
However, there are some who use Earth Day to push more radical ideas, and demonize the very industry that makes our life on this Earth possible.
That’s why this Earth Day, we should take the time to honour Canada’s energy industry, and acknowledge the central role it plays in all of our lives.
The lifeblood of our economy
Without oil and the energy industry, the computer I wrote this on wouldn’t even exist, and the device you’re using to read this could never have been shipped in the first place.
Every medical advancement, every increase to our wealth, and every material comfort we enjoy as Canadians, was made possible by the energy industry.
It is deeply ironic that those who are attacking the energy industry today are spreading their message via devices that can only exist because of oil, and the hard work of those who make that oil usable.
A debt of gratitude
Despite the central role the energy industry plays in our lives, and despite the fact that it keeps us alive, there is very little recognition of the debt of gratitude we all owe to the Canadian energy industry.
Instead, it is taken for granted and demonized, while ever more costs and restrictions are imposed upon it.
That must change.
It is time for Canada to fully embrace our energy industry, and the men and women who keep it running.
On Earth Day, let’s acknowledge the industry that is able to turn the natural abundance of our planet into the energy that powers our nation and civilization.
