The 8.1% increase comes as China’s dictator Xi Jinping is set to rule for life, and the Communist state becomes more aggressive in relation to their neighbours.
China continues to demonstrate that they have every intention of displacing the United States as the dominant world power.
Their military budget is set to increase 8.1% this year, which would bring it to $175 Billion USD.
China has the world’s second most heavily-funded military, and spending last year had already grown by 7%, the latest in a long line of military spending hikes.
In a statement, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said “China will advance all aspects of military training and war preparedness, and firmly and resolvedly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests. Faced with profound changes in the national security environment” the absolute leadership of the military by the ruling Communist Party must be observed, and the unity between the government and the military and the people and the military must always be “strong as stone.”
China’s rapid military spending increases will be of concern to their neighbours, who have watched China make increasingly aggressive territorial claims and militarize islands in the South China Sea.
The move should also be concerning to all of us who value freedom and democracy, as a more militarily powerful China – especially under the leadership of dictator Xi Jinping – is not a good thing.
That’s why Canada needs to get our garbage procurement system in order and increase military spending to ensure we have a strong national defence. After all, despite our small population, we have an economy similar in size to Russia – a nation with a strong military – and there’s no reason we can’t have a military capable of deterring any aggression or encroachment on our national homeland.
