LANDSLIDE: Conservatives Crush Liberals In Quebec Byelection

Formerly held by the Liberals, Chicoutimi – Le Fjord goes to Conservatives by a huge margin.

In the first test of Justin Trudeau’s supposed popularity bump after the Canada-US trade dispute, his party got crushed in a byelection, losing the seat of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord to the Conservatives.

The seat was previously held by the Liberals under MP Denis Lemieux. But in the byelection, the Conservatives won 53% of the vote. Richard Martel will become the new MP for the area.

The Liberals were far back with 29%.

Meanwhile, the NDP appears to have totally collapsed in Quebec, as they won 8.6%. The Bloc also failed to make a mark in the riding, winning just 5.6%.

For contrast, the previous election results had the Liberals winning 31%, the NDP winning 29.7%, the Bloc winning 20.5%, and the Conservatives getting just 16.6%.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has been making an appeal to Quebec nationalists, touting the support of former Bloc Quebecois Leader Michel Gauthier.

According to the Montreal Gazette,

“Scheer has also endorsed a number of Quebec-focused policies designed to appeal to erstwhile separatists and soft nationalists — such as allowing Quebec to collect federal taxes on Ottawa’s behalf so that Quebecers would be able to file a single federal-provincial tax return each year, rather than the two they’re currently required to file. As well, Scheer has said he’d give Quebec more power over culture and immigration and has promised to crack down on the influx of irregular refugee claimants, which has become a particular problem at Quebec’s Lacolle border crossing.”

Here’s what Scheer said on Twitter after the big Conservative win:

“On behalf of the Conservative caucus, I would like to congratulate on his victory in Chicoutimi – Le Fjord. Residents can count on Richard to defend the region’s interests and to be a strong advocate in Ottawa. 1/3″

“Quebecers and Canadians are tired of the Prime Minister’s big deficit and high tax agenda. More and more, they are disappointed by this Liberal government and understand that only the @CPC_HQ can defend their interests. 2/3”

“Conservatives believe in responsible spending and in lowering taxes to make life more affordable for all Canadians. I look forward to working with Richard to spread our positive Conservative vision for Canada. 3/3”

The huge byelection win will be a big boost for Scheer and the Conservatives, who had been facing internal pressure after Maxime Bernier was removed from the Shadow Cabinet. Nothing helps bring people together better than a win.

For the Trudeau Liberals, there are certainly growing fears among their MPs as to how the national mood has shifted against them. After watching their provincial cousins get destroyed in Ontario, the Liberals had been hoping that the fight between Trudeau and Trump would give them a big boost.

However, while Trudeau seems to have gotten a temporary bump to his approval ratings, it clearly hasn’t translated into votes, and the list of Liberal scandals, lies, and failures are taking a serious toll.
