Leaders need to stand up to the radical leftists who are getting more and more extreme.
While some on the far-left are trying to demonize Doug Ford for skipping the Toronto Pride parade, it is clear to most people that he made the right move.
As a ‘Live-and-let-live’ person, I think the government should stay out of people’s personal lives. I have attended pride parades before to show support for the LGBT community, and would do so again under the right circumstances.
However, in some cities – including Toronto – the pride parades are becoming increasingly taken over by radical leftists, who are turning the event from something that was truly inclusive (including inclusive of the police), into an extremist event.
Many years ago, the police conducted raids against LGBT people, and violence was often committed against gay people. Since then, the police have made amends, and shown support for the rights of all people. The police have offered support for pride parades, which you would think is exactly what everyone would want to see when it comes to inclusiveness.
However, that’s not enough for the radical leftists.
The leftists are now pushing the message of extreme black lives matter activists (who don’t speak for most black people or most people overall), and that includes extremist demands to ban the police from marching in the parade in uniform.
Obviously, that totally destroys the inclusiveness of the event, and that’s something that a true leader can’t stand for.
That’s why Doug Ford is 100% correct to skip the Toronto Pride parade so long as the police are excluded.
Police officers put their lives at risk every day, dealing with the worst and most troubling aspects of our society in order to keep us safe. To ban them from an event is a disgrace.
As Ford said, “I support our police. And I support our LGBT community, and what they want, when I spoke to them … they want lower gas prices, they want responsible government, and when they call I’ll be at their door just as quick as I’m gonna be at anyone else’s door.”
While the left will attack Ford’s comments, he is demonstrating what a true leader should do. Instead of treating people as token members of minority groups, he’s focusing on the common interests all people have: Responsive representation, making life affordable, and a good economy.
And Ford is right to refuse to give in to the radical left agenda that seeks to politicize everything and tear our society apart.
Ford is a rare example of common sense leadership in Canada, and it’s something our country needs far more of.
