A man is in custody after five people were killed, and others “gravely injured” in a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland.

According to police, it was a “targeted attack” on the newspaper.

According to reports, “A shooter is in custody, police said. Police would not name the suspect. The attacker had mutilated his fingers in an apparent attempt to make it harder to identify him, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. The official said investigators still managed to identify him, though it was not clear how.”

Phil Davis – the crime reporter for the Capital Gazette – was in the building as the shooting took place, and tweeted about what happened:

US President Donald Trump shared his thoughts on Twitter:

“Prior to departing Wisconsin, I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene.”
