“A handgun ban may sound like a good idea, but it will only make criminals out of responsible gun owners while doing nothing to prevent criminals from getting guns.”
Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer has unveiled his plan to fight the rise of gun crime in the country.
Scheer says his focus will be on going after criminals, instead of punishing law-abiding Canadian gun owners.
Among Scheer’s plans are tougher sentences for people with smuggled weapons, and measures to crack down on guns being sold through the legal process and then being sent to criminals.
Scheer also plans to bring in new laws to deal with the issue of people selling guns to prohibitive buyers.
In a good move, Scheer has rejected the idea of a handgun ban, which would only punish law-abiding Canadians while doing nothing to stop crime:
As noted by the CP, “We need to get guns out of the hands of people who use them to commit crimes, and that’s what this policy will do,” said a senior Conservative party official. “A handgun ban may sound like a good idea, but it will only make criminals out of responsible gun owners while doing nothing to prevent criminals from getting guns.”
The Conservative announcement is based on common-sense, targeting the perpetrators of crime rather than taking the Liberal approach of punishing law-abiding people.
