Why Vaccine Passports Go Against Everything Canada Is Supposed To Stand For

Becoming a ‘show me your papers’ society would be antithetical to the idea of freedom and privacy we claim to value in this country.

With continued chatter about vaccine passports, it is essential that we push back against that idea.

When you hear the term, there’s a good chance it reminds of you something we would expect in authoritarian nations, and there’s a good reason for that.

Widespread vaccine passports would transform Canada into a ‘show me your papers’ society, further expanding the draconian power government possesses.

And it is being made clear by the government that the idea is still on the table:

“Health Minister Patty Hajdu says the government “remains committed to having the conversations with international partners” about a vaccine passport #cdnpoli”

Additionally, the Ontario government is considering what they call ‘immunity certificates’ – vaccine passports by another name:

“The Ontario government considered plans to issue digital “immunity certificates” to people as they received their COVID-19 vaccinations, handing them a pass that could be stored on their smartphone and potentially checked by long-term care home attendants, employers or airline staff. But the province has not yet decided whether to proceed with the idea.

The idea of this kind of “vaccine passport” is being debated around the world, with several countries developing similar plans, including the United States and Britain, which released new details about its proposals on Monday. Other provinces, such as British Columbia and Nova Scotia, have been considering their use, as have private companies, such as Ticketmaster. Critics, including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, say the idea raises tough questions about privacy, human rights and the potential for discrimination against those who cannot receive the vaccine for medical reasons.”

Being a ‘free country’ should mean something

We often talk about how Canada is a ‘free country,’ but it’s not enough just to say that.

There must be actual freedom behind that claim.

Vaccine passports would go completely against the idea of freedom – and medical privacy – that are considered pillars of our society and way of life.

Make no mistake, this would create a ‘show me your papers’ situation over and over again, with police, government officials, and businesses demanding proof of vaccination for everything.

This would leave those who chose not to get the vaccine blocked from many things, effectively restricting their freedom.

Now, some would point out that this is the point, put pressure on people to get the vaccine so they can be ‘free again.’

This idea, taking away freedom to ‘give it back’ in ‘exchange’ for doing what the government wants you to do, was summed up by a public health professor speaking on CNN:

“A “medical analyst” on Cuomo Primetime says that states should not reopen because it’s easier to control people when they can’t enjoy their freedoms:”

Look at the argument she’s making here.

First, she talks of “we” and “them,” separating herself from the general public as if it’s her job to tell people what to do.

Second, she laments that the ‘window’ to use the vaccine as a ‘ticket back to pre-pandemic life’ is ‘narrowing,’ as states in the US reopen. Rather than being glad that people are getting back to normal, she’s upset that the situation can’t be manipulated.

Third, she straight up says ‘reopening policy’ must be ‘tied to vaccination status.’ Note how she isn’t even talking here about the broader issue of health, it’s simply a lament of the loss of control over people.

Fourth, she is saying that the incentive for people to get their freedom back is to get the vaccine, and laments how ‘people are going to go out and enjoy these freedoms anyway.’ Yes, heaven forbid people enjoy the freedoms they previously had and are supposedly guaranteed to them.

Fifth, she talks about not reaching ‘herd immunity,’ which is interesting, because herd immunity used to be discussed as a situation in which a combination of those who recovered and those who were vaccinated was enough to reach that point, without everyone having to be vaccinated.

But then, the WHO changed the definition:

The idea of ‘herd immunity as a concept for vaccination’ is not the previously agreed-upon meaning of the term.

It was a political change, made to try and make people forget that herd immunity does not require everyone to be vaccinated.

As you saw in the video above, a very controlling and authoritarian attitude lurks behind much of this, and the change in the definition of herd immunity feeds into the desire of those who want expanded power.

Medical privacy

Beyond the reality that vaccine passports would be an infringement on individual freedom, it would also infringe on medical privacy.

Medical privacy is considered one of the cornerstones of our society, and is essential to ensure people are not discriminated against due to health status.

By imposing vaccine passports, the idea of medical privacy would be severely damaged.

Now, some will look at this and say “well, everyone should just get the vaccine then,” but that’s not the point here.

As we saw above, herd immunity does not require 100% of a population to be vaccinated.

This leaves people with choices, as it should be in a ‘free society.’

Those who want to get the vaccine can do so, and they will feel confident to venture out and enjoy life.

Those who do not want to get the vaccine can make that choice as well, and they can feel confident that they are taking a level of risk of their own choosing.

The combination of people who got the Wuhan Virus and recovered, those who are vaccinated, and those who chose not to get the vaccine will reach a point where herd immunity is obtained.

None of that requires vaccine passports.

Vaccine Passports are coercion under a different name

Finally, let’s consider how coercive vaccine passports are.

It takes away the freedom of choice someone has in regards to the vaccine, expecting people to simply bow down to health officials and politicians who quite frankly haven’t earned that level of trust.

It also is a dangerous distortion and manipulation of the idea of ‘freedom.’

If your ‘freedoms’ can be taken at the whim of a government official or bureaucrat, if they are something that are ‘given’ back to you if you do what the government wants, then they aren’t really ‘freedoms’ and you aren’t really free.

Canada Vaccine Passports must be rejected

Throughout history, Canada has at least tried to move towards being a freer society, and freedom is the cornerstone of both our country, and of Western Civilization upon which Canada is most fundamentally based.

To embrace vaccine passports would be to reject our core values, and we need to speak out as strongly as possible against it.
