Don’t Let The Media Give The Liberals A Free Pass On How They’ve Damaged Our Economy

The government will obviously want to blame recent crises for the state of Canada’s economy, but they put us in a terrible position long beforehand.

From a human perspective, nobody likes to see a crisis.

A crisis means a period of relative peace and stability has ended, and the consequences of a crisis are – by definition – severe.

Unfortunately, what we feel as human beings and what drives our political agendas are often two completely different things.

Governments often are glad to see a crisis, because it gives them the ability to grab more power than they otherwise would be able to get away with.

We of course have seen that over the past two-and-a-half years, with our rights and freedoms restricted more than anyone would have expected.

Aside from grabbing more power, there’s another reason governments may like to see a crisis take place:

They get to distract from their own failures.

And more than that, they get to retcon their failures as being consequences of current events.

Here’s what I mean by that.

In the case of covid, the Liberals had been running massive deficits for years before the crisis. They were repeatedly warned that this left our country more vulnerable in case something went wrong. During good times, governments should be running surpluses or at the very least balancing their budget. This leaves more room for short-term deficit spending and easier access to quality credit when there is a crisis.

The Liberals ignored that advice, and when covid hit they added to deficits even more, racking up an immense amount of debt. That debt was financed by the Bank of Canada, who rapidly expanded our money supply.

As a result, inflation surged and the cost-of-living is making life less and less affordable for a growing swath of Canadians.

However, because covid was a global event, and because media attention spans tend to be short, the Liberals have been able to convince many people that our large budget deficits and the rising cost-of-living are solely because of the virus and the economic fallout, rather than being trends that were already in place before hand and which only worsened.

The Liberals borrowed during good times, and borrowed more during bad times, and not only didn’t pay a political price for it, but watched as the Conservative Party (under Erin O’Toole’s leadership) also pledged to run deficits for another decade.

War in Europe

That brings us to events in Europe.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine will have – and is already having – serious economic consequences. Both countries are huge wheat exporters, and Russia exports a large amount of fertilizer. Thus, food prices are going to surge.

Of course, oil and gas prices are already surging, as would be expected when a massive source of energy becomes disconnected from a significant segment of the world market.

Inflation – which was already reaching decade-long highs – is increasing.

Finance minister Chrystia Freeland has said Canada will face economic ‘collateral damage’ from the sanctions on Russia:

“I have to be honest with Canadians that there could be some collateral damage in Canada,” said Freeland.

While this is correct, Freeland leaves out the fact that Liberal policies like the carbon tax and anti-energy sector agenda will make the economic damage far worse.

The establishment press – who are largely reliant on government money (AKA taxpayers money taken without asking Canadians) – are going along with the narrative that our economic problems are solely due to current events.

There is little discussion on how massive overspending put our economy in a precarious position.

There is little discussion about how the Liberals’ opposition to the energy sector has left us without the ability to rapidly ramp up energy sales to Europe.

There is little discussion of how surging energy costs and gas prices are exactly what the carbon tax was meant to ‘accomplish.’

And there’s little discussion of how – when all those issues are taken into account and considered as a whole – the Liberal government has been absolutely disastrous for our economy.

Just take a look at the chart below:

Image

“How are Canadians not furious about the mismanagement of our economy. Why isn’t this discussed during Freeland’s updates? #cdnecon”

That chart above and the truth it tells should be the basis for all of our economic discussions going forward.

The Liberals can’t blame this on covid, since every country went through covid.

The Liberals can’t blame this on war in Europe, since these predictions predate Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

And the Liberals can’t blame this on Stephen Harper (though they will certainly try) since he left them a balanced budget.

Any objective look at the facts makes it entirely clear that Canada’s current struggles are largely due to the policies of the Liberal government.

The Liberals strangled our energy sector.

The Liberals ran up huge deficits during good times.

The Liberals imposed the carbon tax and drove up the cost-of-living.

The Liberals created a business environment that is increasingly unwelcome to investment.

Those are the facts.

Independent media

You won’t hear an in-depth discussion about the Liberal government’s failed economic record in the establishment press.

And so, we once again will rely upon independent media for the truth.

Independent media is free of government control, because it’s not reliant upon government money, and thus isn’t constrained by pushing a pro-government narrative.

The reason this is so important is that we are facing a significant battle to define the challenges our country faces, and if the truth doesn’t win that battle then our country will remain under the control of politicians like Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland who seem to think that economic illiteracy is a virtue.

Canada is in desperate need of fiscal responsibility, pro-energy sector policies, lower taxes, and more personal freedom. Public support for those ideas will be built upon the truth shared by independent media, in an ongoing battle against the false narratives and absence of context that we often see in establishment press.
