Jean Charest’s Trudeau-Style Attempt To Use Abortion As Wedge Issue Backfires

Using Trudeau tactics didn’t work out for Charest in the CPC leadership debate.

One of Justin Trudeau’s favourite political tactics is to throw out a bunch of wedge issues in order to try and distract Canadians from his failures.

As I recently wrote, abortion and guns are the issues he and the Liberals bring up the most in order to try and create problems for the Conservatives and divide Canadians.

With inflation surging, the last thing Trudeau and the Liberals want to talk about is how their inflationary policies are making life less and less affordable for Canadians.

Charest using Trudeau tactics

While we’ve come to expect those kind of divisive tactics from Trudeau, former Quebec Liberal premier Jean Charest attempted to do the same thing in the latest CPC leadership debate.

Despite Pierre Poilievre having repeatedly said that a Poilievre government wouldn’t pass legislation restriction abortion – the same position as the Harper government – Charest desperately and cynically tried to make it into a wedge issue.

He simply ignored Poilievre’s remarks and pretended that Poilievre hadn’t taken a position on abortion.

In short, Charest did exactly what the Trudeau Liberals did, which is to ignore reality and pretend the Conservatives are going to restrict abortion, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Charest’s tactic backfires

So, how did using the Trudeau-style tactic work for Jean Charest?

It didn’t go well.

In fact, it backfired badly.

In response to Charest, Poilievre pointed out that Charest was the only candidate who had actually voted for legislation that would restrict abortion.

That is correct, and it exemplifies the rampant hypocrisy of Charest.

Charest is attempting to pretend that the past didn’t happen, demonizing Poilievre when Charest’s record wouldn’t hold up under Charest’s newfound standards.

Poilievre then pointed out how Charest has been doing a lot of ‘forgetting’ lately.

It was a devastating moment for Charest, since it neatly encapsulated both his hypocrisy and the many aspects of his record that are so out of step with what Conservatives believe.

The fact is, Conservatives are tired of Justin Trudeau’s divisive and dishonest tactics, and the last thing our country needs is more of the same from Jean Charest.
