Charest Criticized As Hypocrite After Claiming Huawei Decision Took “Too Long” Despite Recently Working For The Company

Does he think Huawei should have been banned while he was working for them?

Many people are criticizing the Trudeau government for taking too long to finally ban Huawei from Canada’s networks.

Most of those issuing such criticism have credibility, as many Canadians have long been calling for Huawei to be banned.

Yet, someone who doesn’t have credibility in that area is Jean Charest.

Here’s what Charest said on Twitter following the announcement that the government would be banning Huawei:

“While I commend the Gov’t of Canada for finally making the right decision to ban Huawei from our 5G networks, it took them too long.

As Prime Minister, I will order a national security review of all strategic infrastructure projects to protect Canada’s national security.”

When did Jean Charest work for Huawei?

As recently as 2020, Jean Charest was working for Huawei.

Part of his work was trying to help the company get approved to become part of Canada’s 5G networks, the same thing Charest now says he wants banned.

Even the establishment media has reported this, as the Globe & Mail did in 2020:

“A source said Mr. Charest and Mr. Wouters are providing strategic advice to Huawei. This includes intelligence and policy advice on understanding the extradition process facing Ms. Meng, the chief financial officer and daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei.

They are also advising Huawei as it seeks approval to sell equipment for the construction of Canada’s 5G networks. The federal government is conducting a cybersecurity review to determine whether Canada should bar the Chinese high-tech firm from participating in the next generation of wireless technology, as the United States and Australia have. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the source because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.”

So, Charest was helping advise Huawei on becoming part of Canada’s 5G network as recently as 2020, yet he now thinks Huawei should have been banned earlier?

That simply doesn’t add up.

Does Charest think Huawei should have been banned while he was working for them?

And if so, why would he have been helping advise Huawei if they thought they shouldn’t be in Canada?

Charest has said he’s “proud” of the work he did for Huawei. What’s changed?

Further, if he now thinks that Huawei and related issues necessitate a national security review, what does that say about his judgement in working for that Communist China-controlled company?

Hypocrisy

Senator Leo Housakos and others responded to Charest’s remarks, and the response indicates that Charest is seen by many as a total hypocrite:

“Why didn’t you call for the banning of Huawei from Canada’s 5G while you were Huawei’s high price lawyer for years? If Huawei is a threat to our strategic infrastructure, then what does that make you?”

That’s just a sample of what people are saying.

Clearly, Canadians can see through Charest’s hypocrisy and don’t want someone who worked for Huawei to lead a major national political party.
