The Interests Of Trudeau, Charest, And The Establishment Media Are Aligned

Those who benefit from the status quo want to keep things as they are.

Let’s look at three Tweets from Conservative leadership candidates in response to the horrendous Supreme Court ruling that struck down multiple life sentences for mass killers:

“I will invoke the notwithstanding clause to keep this terrorist killer behind bars for life.”

“That said, in this instance of heinous crime with multiple victims, should the courts not accept consecutive sentences, I will use s33 to ensure that justice is served in situations like this.”

You’ll note that Poilievre, Brown, and Charest are all taking the same position here.

They are all saying they will invoke the notwithstanding clause to ensure that mass murdered can face multiple life sentences.

It’s a rare instance of those three candidates agreeing, as Charest & Brown have generally been pushing a more pro-carbon tax, big-government stance compared to Poilievre’s limited government approach.

So why do I mention this?

Because it demonstrates how the bias of the establishment media works.

Notice how you aren’t seeing the media condemn Jean Charest and Patrick Brown for “attacking our institutions” or “pandering to populism.”

After all, they are both responding to widespread public outrage following the Supreme Court decision, and are promising to use constitutional powers to ensure mass murderers can be more severely punished.

They are questioning a decision made by the Supreme Court.

When Poilievre questions the Bank of Canada, he’s accused of “undermining Canada’s institutions.”

Why aren’t Brown & Charest accused of doing the same in this instance?

If Poilievre is a ‘dangerous populist,’ and if Charest and Brown are taking the same position as Poilievre on the use of the Notwithstanding Clause in this case, shouldn’t they too be accused of ‘dangerous populism?’

The establishment protects its own

The reason Charest in particular gets away with such hypocrisy is that the establishment knows he won’t change much if he gets into power.

So, they will help him create whatever narrative is necessary to win.

That narrative requires using every available opportunity to demonize Pierre Poilievre as a ‘populist,’ while Charest is allowed to appeal to public sentiment without ever being accused of the same thing.

Charest will be allowed to get away with it, and Poilievre will not.

By extension, since the Brown & Charest campaigns are seen as linked, Brown will also be able to generally avoid the ‘populist’ label.

Where Trudeau fits in

There is a clear link between the Trudeau government, the media establishment, and Jean Charest.

Trudeau has provided endless bailouts to the establishment media, making them further and further dependent on the state. Charest gives every indication of wanting to keep that arrangement in place, even criticizing Poilievre for wanting to defund the CBC.

While Poilievre spends much of his time criticizing Justin Trudeau along with Charest & Brown, Charest & Brown spend nearly all of their time criticizing Poilievre, largely giving Trudeau a free pass.

This indicates that the real political divide in Canada is increasingly the Trudeau/Charest/Singh/Media worldview that would keep the status quo in place, and the Poilievre/CPC base/Independent worldview that views the Canadian status quo as fundamentally flawed and in need of significant change.

This is a key reason why many in the CPC base continue to express surprise that Charest is running. They can see how odd it is that he is running as a defender of the status quo in a party that has been railing against that status quo.

Charest seems much more critical of elements in the CPC that he disagrees with, than he does of the damage Trudeau is doing to Canada.

If Charest were to lead the CPC, the establishment would be confident that no matter who wins, they would remain in control.
