Officer Says Ottawa Police Had Tow Trucks & Operation Ready To Go Without Emergencies Act

What ‘justifications’ does the flailing Trudeau government have left for their misuse of the Emergencies Act?

The Trudeau government has gone through yet another brutal day of Emergencies Act testimony, further stripping bare the dishonesty that surrounded their use of heavy-handed government powers.

At the Inquiry, Ottawa Police Superintendent Robert Bernier said the police had tow trucks ready to go, and had an operational plan for their use before the Emergencies Act was invoked.

According to Bernier, “he didn’t need the federal government to compel truck drivers to remove vehicles that were entrenched in the downtown core, because police had already assembled 34 tow trucks with willing drivers.”

Further, there was already a “preplanned police operation” in place that could have been implemented without the Act:

“Rob Kittredge, JCCF Counsel: Numerous other OPP and OPS witnesses have testified that the federal emergency powers may have been helpful to police in various ways, but they were not necessary. Would you agree with that?

Superintendent Bernier: Yes.

Kittredge: Thank you.”

Also, Bernier said that to his knowledge, there was no point at which Freedom Convoy organizers failed to co-operate with the police:

“Superintendent Bernier agrees that to his knowledge, convoy organizers always cooperated with OPS.”

The only ‘positive’ thing Bernier really said about the Act is that it “may” have encouraged some protesters not to head to downtown Ottawa and may have encouraged people to listen more to the police.

This is how the whole inquiry has gone so far.

Over and over again, witnesses have testified that the act wasn’t needed, and that – at best – it ‘possibly’ helped police gain more compliance.

But of course, that isn’t the standard for invoking the Act.

And Bernier’s testimony directly contradicts what the Trudeau government claimed about needing the Act to compel tow truck companies, as this True North column explains:

“In a recent CBC Radio interview defending his government’s response to the Freedom Convoy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that tow truck drivers in Ottawa required the Emergencies Act to move in on rigs within the city’s downtown core.

“We had a range of advice from Justice. From Public Safety. From various areas. But if you think about the specific tools, one of the concrete complaints was tow truck drivers weren’t willing to send in their rigs at the cost of being outed or harassed by these protesters,” said Trudeau.

When he was asked by a reporter whether it was the need to get tow trucks into the area which finally convinced the government to act, Trudeau said it was the only effective option left.

“Well, no.. I said, ‘Okay. What are the tools to get tow truck drivers to do that?’ And we saw that one of the only tools we had that was going to be effective in the timeframe necessary was to bring in the Emergencies Act.””

It would seem that Trudeau wasn’t telling the truth here.

We have a Superintendent of the Ottawa Police saying they had tow trucks and a plan ready to go without the Emergencies Act.

Who to believe?

Trudeau – who has lied repeatedly through this time in office?

Or a police officer who has nothing to gain either way?

To all common-sense Canadians, the answer is obvious.
