Jacinda Ardern To Resign As Prime Minister Of New Zealand

Ardern had become increasingly unpopular, and her party was set for a possible defeat in elections due later this year.

Jacinda Ardern has announced she will resign as Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Ardern – who was once heavily touted by many media outlets as an ‘ideal’ progressive leader – had found herself becoming increasingly unpopular due to a weakening economy and an overbearing approach on various issues.

In 2020, Ardern’s Labor Party won a stunning 50% of the vote, demolishing the more conservative National Party by a near 2-1 margin.

Recent polls however showed the Labor Party in the low to mid 30’s, trailing the National Party by around 5-15 points depending on the survey.

Similarly to Justin Trudeau here in Canada, Ardern – who at age 27 became president of the International Union of Socialist Youth – had often embraced a more authoritarian view of government power and criticized freedom of speech, something that proved temporarily popular when people were scared, but has becoming less and less popular as people emerge from a fear-based mindset and return to the more traditional pro-liberty values of the Western world.

Ardern now says she doesn’t have enough left in the tank and wants to spend more time with her family.
