NDP Leader Noncommittal On Maintaining Pact With Liberals As Trudeau Continues To Refuse Calls For Inquiry

“It’s not a decision we’re making today,” said Jagmeet Singh.

At a press conference, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was asked whether he would end his pact with the Liberals if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues to refuse calls to hold a public inquiry into alleged Chinese Communist Party interference in Canada’s democratic institutions.

In his response, Singh was noncommittal, instead emphasizing his continued call for an inquiry to take place.

“It’s not a decision we’re making today”

Jagmeet Singh dodges the question of if he would pull the NDP’s support in propping up the Liberal minority government over Justin Trudeau’s refusal to call an inquiry into Chinese election interference.”

Singh was also asked about the Parliamentary committee process, and whether he was concerned confidence in Canada’s democratic institutions was being eroded.

Here’s what he said:

“”I actually want to protect our democracy. I want to protect the importance of our democratic processes,” says NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in Winnipeg as he responds to a question on the need for a public inquiry into alleged Chinese election interference.”

Singh’s response is notable, particularly the way in which he is trying to make both the Liberals & Conservatives seem equally responsible – despite the allegations being that China wanted to keep Trudeau in office and defeat the Conservatives.

Whether that is a one-off comment by Singh, or a preview of his long-term strategy to subtly help Trudeau remains to be seen.
