Trudeau-Appointed Senator Compares Foreign Agent Registry To Chinese Exclusion Act

The comparison has been widely denounced.

Senator Yuen Pau Woo – who until recently was the head of the Independent Senate Group (AKA Liberal Senators), is comparing the idea of a foreign agent registry to the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Between 1923 and 1947, the Chinese Exclusion Act made it nearly impossible for Chinese People to enter Canada. The Act was repealed in 1947.

By contrast, a foreign agent registry – of the type many of our allies already have – is designed to ensure that individuals doing the work of foreign countries – such as China and Russia – have to register and make themselves known.

Despite the lack of any connection between a foreign agent registry and the Chinese Exclusion Act, Senator Woo is making the comparison anyway:

“100 years ago, as part of the #ChineseExclusionAct, Canada forced all Chinese people in the country to register or face deportation. How can we prevent this registry from becoming a modern form of Chinese exclusion? S-237 & the former C-282 are not the answer. Time to speak out”

Senator Woo’s remarks have since been widely denounced:

“I am sorry, but no. The point of the foreign agent registry is to be country agnostic solution to deter foreign interference. This is a false and appalling comparison.”

“Opposed the Uyghur Genocide bill, supported Beijing’s Winter Olympics, and claimed that China has a “legitimate” legal system.
Now this ridiculous comparison.
Time will tell now who needs to register as a foreign agent.”

As noted by Terry Glavin, these aren’t ‘gaffes’ by Senator Woo:

“These aren’t “gaffes” on Senator Woo’s part. He & his fellow Senate compradors have been praised by China’s ambassador as “people of vision.” His determination to run interference for Beijing’s Canadian assets is the reason why he was appointed to the Senate in the first place.”

“Infamous in #YVR for urging more wealth migration from China into the housing market, Woo’s maiden speech in the senate urged Canadians to shut up about China’s annexation of the South China Sea. It’s not some fluke. It’s why he was appointed.”

Woo’s remarks were so egregious that even Gerald Butts felt compelled to issue criticism:

“This is an ill-advised comparison, to be charitable. We should know when Canadian citizens — especially former officials — are being paid by a foreign government to represent their interests in Canada.”

Meanwhile, those who want to protect Canada from China’s influence are speaking in support of a foreign agent registry:

“We fully support bill S237 & HKW Patron @SenatorHousakos long-standing efforts to introduce a foreign agents registry. Canada does not need to wait for a public consultation to conclude to know that the response to allegations of #PRC #interference is a foreign agents registry.”

The overwhelmingly negative response to Senator Woo’s remarks indicate that Canadians are done putting up with gaslighting when it comes to the fully legitimate desire to protect our nation from the influence of the Chinese Communist Party.
