REPORT: UCP Wins Alberta Election, NDP Defeated

Danielle Smith has led the UCP to victory, vanquishing the socialist NDP led by Rachel Notley.

In a victory for individual freedom, economic freedom, and the unleashing of human potential, the Alberta United Conservative Party has defeated the collectivist socialist NDP.

The UCP is leading in a majority of seats and leads in the popular vote as well. Despite long delays in votes being counted, the UCP advantage is too strong for the NDP to overcome. The UCP will form a majority government.

Much of the media had sought to defeat Smith, attempting to smear her as an extremist despite the real extremism being on the NDP side. In fact, the NDP had at least six candidates who were open Communists.

During the campaign, Notley promised to bring in a massive 38% tax hike on businesses, which would have cost over 33,000 jobs and destroyed $1 billion in investment.

Smith had countered Notley by proposing a lower-tax agenda, along with pledging to take strong action to prevent crime and help addicts get treatment rather than giving them illegal drugs at taxpayers expense.

Smith benefitted from a strong debate performance which helped to blunt the NDP’s attacks against her, while also winning endorsements from both former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and current Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre – who are both very popular in Alberta.

By contrast, Notley sought to distance herself from her socialist allies Justin Trudeau & Jagmeet Singh. In the final week of the campaign, both Harper and Poilievre emphasized the similarity between Notley, Trudeau, and Singh, and Notley’s tax hike plan made those comparisons even more obvious.

This is a big win for those of us who value individual freedom, limits on the power of the government, and the unleashing of human potential that occurs when government gets out of the way. And it’s a big loss for the collectivists who want to use government power to constrain our potential and leech off the most productive members of our society.
