Over and over again, world leaders have said that Hamas can no longer be part of the future in Gaza. If those words are to mean anything, we must support Israel’s push to totally defeat Hamas.
Our leaders have forgotten many lessons of history – even relatively recent history.
For example, the Allies in World War Two understood that Germany’s fascist regime had to be completely destroyed. After launching a genocidal war of aggression, Germany could not be allowed to keep conquered territory, and the fascist regime could not remain in power.
This was the right move, and the complete defeat of the fascist German regime not only helped to establish a taboo against territorial conquest, but also freed Germany to become the prosperous and democratic nation it is today.
Sometimes, a nation or territory succumbs so entirely to insane genocidal thinking that it simply cannot be reasoned with.
And that’s exactly the threat Israel faces from Hamas.
Hamas – with an assist from the United Nations – has spent years indoctrinating young Gazans in order to turn them into genocidal anti-Semitic terrorists. Hamas openly calls for the destruction of Israel, and on October 7th we saw Hamas commit acts of horrific inhuman savagery against Israel.
And so, Israel has rightfully come to the conclusion that Hamas must be destroyed. Hamas must lose both military and political power in Gaza, and a new government must be put in place in Gaza along with a deradicalization campaign similar to what happened in Germany to begin erasing the anti-Semitic fascist indoctrination.
When Israel was first attacked, many leaders – including Canadian leaders – agreed. They said that Israel must be free to destroy Hamas, and that Hamas cannot play any role in the governance of Gaza going forward.
But now, just as that is getting closer to happening, just as Israel is about to destroy some of Hamas’ last brigades in Rafah, politicians like Melanie Joly are criticizing the operation:
“We are deeply concerned by reports of an Israeli military operation in Rafah. It would have devastating impact, putting the lives of Palestinians and foreign nationals, including s, seeking refuge in grave danger and making the vital delivery of humanitarian aid dangerous. 1/2”

“We continue our call for the protection of civilians, for the release of hostages, for urgent efforts toward a sustainable ceasefire and for increased humanitarian aid. 2/2”

Notice how there is no call for Hamas to surrender.
There would be no need for an operation in Rafah if Hamas simply disbanded.
But since Hamas refuses to do so, Israel must go in and dismantle Hamas by force.
By going wobbly at this critical moment, politicians like Joly demonstrate weakness and make it clear that they don’t have what it takes to deal with the rapidly rising number of threats facing the free world.
