EKOS survey shows support for resistance, even with uncertain odds of success.
A new EKOS survey shows a majority of Canadians believe Canada should fight back if the United States used military force against our nation. The poll asked the following question: “If Canada were ever to face a situation in which the United States used military force against Canadian territory, what do you believe should be Canada’s primary response?”
The choices and percentages are as follows:
59% – “Defend itself militarily, even if the odds of success are uncertain.”
24% – “Avoid military confrontation & make concessions to prevent further harm.”
17% – “Don’t know/no response.”
73% of Liberal supporters and 78% of NDP supporters said Canada should resist. Among Bloc supporters, 46% say Canada should resist, ahead of the 31% who say Canada should avoid confrontation. However, the results among Conservative supporters are different. 38% of Conservative supporters said Canada should resist, while 46% said Canada should avoid confrontation.
It is notable that supporters of a separatist party – the Bloc Québécois – are more willing to think Canada should defend itself than supporters of the Official Opposition. The overall results indicate a strong spirit of resistance among the Canadian People. The Bloc and CPC results indicate both a strengthening support for Canada among those who were previously somewhat skeptical about the country, and – moving in the other direction – the influence of a ‘MAGA’-style faction within the CPC, a faction that is deeply out of step with broader Canadian sentiment.
