Trudeau also called Elon Musk – who holds Canadian Citizenship – an “American billionaire”.
CBC is funded by the Canadian government.
Nobody can debate this, because it is an undeniable fact.
CBC literally exists because the government runs it and funds it. Even CBC’s backers admit that is the entire point of it. CBC supporters claim Canada needs the CBC to protect Canadian culture (despite Canadian content creators doing very online in free market competition), and claim that the national broadcaster should be protected from the vicissitudes of the market.
I point this out because the enraged reaction from CBC supporters to Twitter affixing the “government funded media” label to CBC seems completely absurd.
Why are they angry?
CBC is funded by the Canadian government. If it wasn’t funded by the government, the label would make no sense. But it is, so the label does make sense.
We can only conclude that those are angry about this are mad that CBC is being accurately labelled.
And Justin Trudeau sure seems angry.
Speaking at an event, Trudeau spread more misinformation, falsely claiming the government-funded CBC was “independent media.”

Make no mistake, this is clear misinformation from Trudeau. He’s lying to Canadians, and he knows it. CBC is funded by the government. It’s not independent. It can’t be independent. It literally depends upon state funding. Also, CBC knows that their funding will be cut if the Conservatives win, so they have an added incentive to keep Trudeau in power. CBC also sued the Conservatives in the middle of the 2019 election. No fair-minded person could believe CBC is independent.
Also, Trudeau’s attack on Elon Musk – dismissing him as an “American billionaire,” is disgraceful. Musk is actually a Canadian Citizen, and Canada should be taking some national pride in his accomplishments:

Ironically, Trudeau is making a good case for defunding CBC. His desperation to have CBC hide the fact that it’s state-funded, and his rage at those who accurately label CBC as what it is, demonstrates why it’s dangerous to have a state broadcaster.
Power hungry, centralizing politicians like Justin Trudeau can’t be trusted with control of a massive media apparatus like CBC, and the best way to ensure we have true media independence is to defund CBC and let media outlets compete in the free market.
