Our Prime Minister says Canada would arrest the Leader of a fellow liberal democracy fighting against a genocidal terror group. Lunatic antisemites & anti-NATO extremists are rioting. Our nation fails to pull our weight and our military is crumbling. This is who we are now.
It’s comforting to say “This isn’t who we are” when we see extremists on the streets of our cities intimidating Jews and demonizing the world’s greatest defensive alliance (NATO).
It’s comforting to distance ourselves from the Prime Minister when he says Canada would arrest the leader of Israel if he set foot in our country.
And it’s comforting to believe that no matter how things get, ‘serious people’ will take charge and ensure a strong national defence before it’s too late.
But those comforting notions no longer match up with reality.
Last night, while the Prime Minister attended a concert, extremists in Montreal acted with absolute impunity as if they owned the streets:
Note the man above stomping on an Israeli flag while carrying a Russian flag. As I’ve long been saying, this is all one war. Russia has been providing significant aid to terror groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. Israel has recovered a large amount of Russian weapons being used by Iran-backed terror groups. The free world faces a dangerous and determined Axis of Aggressors, and we cannot allow ourselves to be fooled by Russian propaganda into forgetting that Russia is a hostile nation that must be resisted.
This is who we are
This is Canada now.
Remember, a country isn’t what we imagine it to be.
A country is what it does, and what it puts up with.
History is full of examples of countries that went from being nice, prosperous, normal places, to dangerous, hateful, and insane places.
In those cases, most people didn’t go crazy, nor were most people actively evil.
Instead, a small group of radicalized people pushed and pushed and pushed, and the average person did nothing.
People decided to ‘go along to get along’, which led to their country being defined and ultimately controlled by the most radicalized elements.
So right now, Canada is what we’re putting up with, which means we are an unreliable ally, a place where antisemites are encouraged, a place where Jewish People are put at risk, a place where our leader has no moral backbone and a place where a desire to be polite has morphed into a dangerous willingness to cede ground to the most hateful and aggressive among us.
We can no longer live in comforting delusions.
Until we prove otherwise, this is exactly who we are.

If this piece left you clearer than it found you, that's the point. I write for readers who want to think past the week, to see the longer pattern beneath the daily story, and to come away steadier rather than more agitated.
That longer view gets built somewhere. On Patreon, essay by essay, I'm constructing The Long Work, a body of analysis meant to outlast the news cycle that prompted it. The readers there make it possible. No subsidies, no strings. The work answers to them.
$8/month to read it as it's built, and to have a hand in building it.
