POLL: Carney Has Strong Backing From Canadians for Withdrawal From Trade Talks

71% back rejecting the U.S. ‘deal’, while just 17% think Canada should have taken it.

A new Abacus Data poll shows strong support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to withdraw Canada from trade talks with the United States.

Respondents were asked to pick between the following statements:

“The Canadian government made the right decision to suspend the talks rather than accept the terms on offer, even if it means higher tariffs and more economic uncertainty”

“The Canadian government made the wrong decision and should have accepted the terms on offer to avoid higher tariffs and more economic uncertainty”

71% said the government made the right decision, while 17% said it made the wrong decision. 12% said they were not sure.

A majority of Canadians in all regions and age groups polled backed the withdrawal:

Regions:

B.C. – 68% – 26%

Alberta – 61% – 23%

Sask/MB – 66% – 17%

Ontario – 70% – 17%

Quebec – 79% – 10%

Atlantic – 66% – 22%

Age:

18-29: 56% – 28%

30-44: 63% – 23%

45-59: 70% – 17%

60+: 85% – 7%

With Trump’s popularity crumbling in the U.S., Mark Carney can count on the support of a clear majority of Canadians, which strengthens Canada’s leverage.
