Pressure had been mounting on Biden to withdraw from the race following his disastrous performance in the first Presidential debate vs Donald Trump.
U.S. President Joe Biden has announced he won’t be running for re-election.
The announcement comes after a steady drumbeat of pressure from Democrats who had urged him to drop out of the race after his rough (and that’s putting it mildly) performance in the first debate against former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Biden’s poll numbers had fallen following the debate, though the race remained relatively close.
But clearly, the drip, drip, drip pressure of Democrats calling for him to exit the race became too much.
This instantly makes Vice President Kamala Harris the favourite to win the Democratic Party nomination, though some in the party are pushing for an open convention rather than a coronation.
