For Canada, Walking Away Is Better Than Surrendering Our Sovereignty

The best outcome is a deal that returns to the positive-sum, low-tariff status quo that was in place before the Trump Administration imposed a raft of new tariffs on Canada and the world. But with that likely not on offer, accepting a deal that weakens our sovereignty over Canadian natural resources would be worse in the long term than walking away from trade talks.

As negotiations between Canada and the U.S. continue, the Globe & Mail is reporting that the U.S. is pushing for first right of refusal on the purchase of critical minerals, Canada purchasing F-35s, Canada buying American radar planes, and Canada guaranteeing higher oil and gas exports.

Washington is making these demands at the point of a tariff gun, with the U.S. threatening 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian products, set to take effect on August 19th if no preliminary deal is signed.

In my view, Canada should be prepared to walk away from the trade talks rather than accept such conditions. The reason is that to accept those conditions under the pressure of yet another tariff threat would be to reward the tactic of using tariffs to coerce trade partners, which would lead to further coercion. Further, those conditions would further deepen Canada’s economic and military dependence on the United States at a time when that dependence is being weaponized by the Trump Administration.

That Administration appears to want vassals rather than allies, and Canada should not accept conditions that would erode our sovereignty over our natural resources or erode our ability to diversify our defence partnerships with more reliable and trustworthy governments.

As difficult as it may be, Canada must be prepared to walk away from trade talks rather than accepting a slide towards vassal state status.
