POLL: 69% of Canadians Want “Team Canada” Approach to Trade War

Just 22% want a “province-first” approach.

A new Angus Reid poll shows a clear majority of Canadians want a unified ‘Team Canada’ approach to the trade war with the United States, while support for a “province-first” approach trails far behind.

When asked whether their province should take a “Team Canada” or “Province First” stance, 69% said “Team Canada,” compared to 22% who said “Province First.”

A majority of respondents in all provinces and regions polled want the unified approach:

British Columbia – 71%

Alberta – 62%

Saskatchewan – 57%

Manitoba – 75%

Ontario – 69%

Quebec – 72%

Atlantic – 69%

91% of Liberal supporters, 70% of NDP supporters, and 69% of Bloc supporters want a Team Canada approach, while Conservatives are more evenly split, with 48% wanting the Team Canada route and 43% wanting the Province First route. It’s notable that support for a Team Canada approach is higher among Bloc voters than among Conservatives, pointing to a real fracture within the Conservative coalition.

Overall, however, Canadians are quite unified. Facing a severe external threat from the Trump Administration, many Canadians recognize the importance of standing together, rather than allowing individual provinces or regions to get picked off one by one.
