Refusal to believe opposition is legitimate tends to be a hallmark of fading regimes.
In both democratic and undemocratic countries, those in power tend to lose their connection with the populace over time.
This of course has far greater consequences in authoritarian states, as leaders who are difficult to remove from power can end up doing tremendous amounts of damage.
That said, even democratic countries – especially those like Canada that are moving in a more authoritarian direction – are not immune to this.
Just look at the response to the massive #TrudeauMustGo campaign on social media.
Regular Canadians from across the country shared their opposition to the Trudeau government.
They put a human face on the millions of Canadians Trudeau has tried to demonize.
Trudeau brazenly demonizes Canadians who oppose him, further dividing the country and weakening our internal unity.
By pushing back, and by showing who they really are, Canadians in the #TrudeauMustGo campaign are strongly standing up for themselves and for all Canadians.
The campaign was started by @Martyupnorth_2 on Twitter, and spread like wildfire:
“I’m a 55 year-old Canadian. I’m married, father to 4, university educated & perfectly bilingual. I’m an engineer, solving problems for 35 yrs. I’m a volunteer hockey coach & an avid outdoorsman. According to Trudeau, I’m an extremist who needs to be dealt with. #TrudeauMustGo”

In response, former top Trudeau advisor Gerald Butts claimed it was bots – not regular Canadians – pushing the campaign:
The real question is who is paying for this campaign? #AccordingToTrudeau #AccordingToBiden https://t.co/jT0OK81nUR

When Marty responded, Butts claimed Marty only “believes” he started the campaign:
“This is for @gmbutts and @ItsDeanBlundell. I started the most recent #TrudeauMustGo trend. Hear why. Any journalists who want to talk, just DM me. This is THE real story, not Gerry’s Russian conspiracy crap. I’m not affiliated with anyone. Sorry if I sound mad, Trudeau does that”

“I don’t doubt Marty is real. I don’t doubt that he believes he started this thing — which started in the US days before he thinks he started it. Sadly, he is being used. By whom?”

Do the Trudeau Liberals think they are widely beloved by Canadians?
This raises an interesting question:
Do the Trudeau Liberals really believe Canadians love them?
The arrogance with which Butts and other Liberal supporters dismissed the many Canadians saying #TrudeauMustGo and sharing their stories tells you that the Liberal echo chamber increasingly filters out any information contrary to the pro-Trudeau narrative.
After all, the Liberals lost the popular vote in the last two federal elections, and are trailing the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservatives in the polls.
The new CPC leader sold more memberships and raised more money than any leadership contestant in Canadian history.
Clearly, there is massive and real opposition to Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government.
To think otherwise is to ignore reality, and that seems to be exactly what many Liberal apologists are doing.
