The Prime Minister is staying on until the Liberals pick a new leader. Parliament will be prorogued until late March.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s time in office is coming to an end.
Trudeau has announced his resignation as Liberal Party Leader, which will set off a Liberal leadership race.
The winner of that race will become the next Prime Minister, since Parliament is being prorogued until March 24th.
As a result, Canada will be led by a lame-duck Prime Minister during trade negotiations with the United States.
There are also significant foreign interference concerns, given how open to manipulation the Liberal leadership process is:
And so, even in resigning, Justin Trudeau has managed to do so in the most self-serving way possible, weakening Canada at such a perilous time for our nation.

EXCLUSIVE POLITICAL ANALYSIS NEWSLETTER
If this piece left you clearer than it found you, that's the point. I write for readers who want to think past the week, to see the longer pattern beneath the daily story, and to come away steadier rather than more agitated.
That longer view gets built somewhere. On Patreon, essay by essay, I'm constructing The Long Work, a body of analysis meant to outlast the news cycle that prompted it. The readers there make it possible. No subsidies, no strings. The work answers to them.
$8/month to read it as it's built, and to have a hand in building it.
