Harper correctly pointed out that the incoming U.S. President is factually incorrect regarding the U.S. trade relationship with Canada. The former Prime Minister also strongly defended Canada’s status as a sovereign nation.
At a time when the United States should be deepening its relationships with its democratic allies like Canada, the incoming Trump Administration is instead alienating those allies.
In Canada, that alienation is taking the form of an impending economic assault against our nation, an assault based on Donald Trump’s false view of how trade works.
Remember, the truth is the truth, and lies don’t become real just because a powerful person like Donald Trump says those lies.
When Trump claims that the U.S. trade deficit with Canada is a ‘subsidy,’ Trump is simply wrong.
And now, some prominent Canadians are pushing back on Trump’s false claims.
In a recent appearance on Standpoint with Gabe Groisman, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper strongly pushed back against Trump’s false statements.
Harper also accurately noted that Trump isn’t talking like an ally.

As a politician who led a Canadian government that was quite friendly with the United States – and who had a strong economic record while in office – Harper speaks with immense credibility here. The fact that he is so put off by Trump’s comments indicates how abnormal and extreme Trump’s rhetoric and tariff policies really are.
Even out of office, Harper is showing what it means to provide pro-Canadian, pro-truth, fact-based leadership.
