Joly telegraphed the best way for China to get what it wants. Now, they are further incentivized to act with aggression towards Canada.
With pressure growing on the federal government to take action and expel the Chinese diplomat who threatened the family of Conservative MP Michael Chong, foreign affairs minister Melanie Joly has been telling everyone who will listen how scared she and the government are about China retaliating.
As a response to a bully, it’s about as bad as it gets. Telegraphing fear, and making it clear that the fear was stopping Canada from taking swift action sent a clear message to China that the use of fear is working and can help them get what they want.
So, it’s unsurprising that they quickly capitalized on that understanding and issued a threatening message:

Notice the tone taken by China here. They are the ones being accused of wrongdoing, yet they take an air of total superiority and arrogance. We are being lectured by a ruthless Communist regime, and right now Canada is just sitting back and taking it.
Melanie Joly has failed a crucial test of leadership. In fact, she’s failed a crucial test of basic rationality. At this point, how could someone in her position not realize that openly musing about how scared the government is of China’s retaliation would do anything other than invite more retaliation?
“This Minister needs to resign. She’s assessing the consequences of kicking a foreign agent out of OUR country for threatening Canadians and their families? Assess the consequences if you DON’T kick him out @melaniejoly. #DoYourJob”

Now, Canadians have been put in even more danger. Every hour we delay in kicking out the diplomat who threatened Chong’s family is another hour in which China is incentivized to be more aggressive towards our country, and another hour in which we look weaker and weaker.
We shouldn’t even be having to debate this. Even if the governmetn finally kicks out the diplomat, it would only be after two years of knowing what happened, and only under massive pressure. All in all, this is an absolutely disgraceful moment for Canada, and the fact that there haven’t been mass resignations says it all about how much our standard of leadership has degraded under Trudeau’s time in office.
