Ukraine Is Showing The World What It Means To Fight For Freedom

All free nations should be standing with Ukraine – through the provision of weapons, not just words – to ensure Russia’s invasion fails.

Across history, many more people have spoken about the importance of freedom than have fought for freedom.

This makes sense, given that – as violent as the world has often been – the majority of people will not be directly involved in a major war.

But this means that the moments when a nation actually does fight for freedom are moments that history remembers and moments that reshape the world.

And we are witnessing just such a moment as Ukraine fights for survival against Russia’s invasion.

As noted by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, the Ukrainian People are fighting heroically for freedom:

The difference between Ukraine and Russia couldn’t be clearer:

On one side stands Ukraine – a nation that is seeking to follow the path of democracy and the rule of law.

On the other side stands Russia, a totalitarian state ruled by a ruthless dictator, a nation that, despite having by far the largest landmass, is still hell-bent on conquering and enslaving millions more people.

Standing with Ukraine are most of the freest nations on Earth.

Standing with Russia are authoritarian states like China, Iran, and North Korea.

This is one of the most clear-cut and obvious moral choices in history.

All who truly value freedom, democracy, and respect for borders stand with Ukraine, while those who support dictatorships or have fallen for Russian propaganda stand with the Kremlin.

Ukraine is paying an immense price for their love of freedom.

While they are receiving assistance in the form of weapons from the free world, it’s Ukrainians and Ukrainians alone who are on the front lines fighting Russia.

Ukraine is single-handedly holding off the inheritors of the massive Soviet arsenal of weapons – an arsenal that was once considered strong enough to potentially conquer all of Europe.

In their determination to be free, Ukrainians are showing tremendous courage, innovation, and resolve.

And make no mistake, everyone who lives in a free nation has a vested interest in Ukraine’s victory.

If Ukraine is able to push Russia out of Ukrainian territory, a clear message will be sent that this world will no longer put up with territorial expansionism from dictatorial states. There will be a surge of confidence in free nations, confidence in the values of individual freedom, the rule of law, and democracy. The world will also be more peaceful, as NATO’s deterrence power will be enhanced and the Russia-China-Iran-North Korea Axis will be weakened.

But if Ukraine is defeated, then everything will be far worse. A victorious Russia will have an expanded military-industrial base and will force millions of Ukrainians into the Russian military. Russia will be emboldened, as will China, Iran, and North Korea. Having ‘outlasted’ the free world, Russia will seek to take a NATO country next (likely Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania) and break NATO completely. This will lead to a larger war, and a global economic collapse.

And so, for countries like Canada and our allied nations in the free world, we have two choices:

Support the brave Ukrainian People now to ensure Ukraine wins, thus ensuring a more peaceful world, and ensuring that the authoritarian axis is weakened.

Or, abandon Ukraine, hand victory to Russia, embolden the authoritarian axis, and ensure that we end up fighting a much larger war which will result in our own citizens likely perishing in large numbers along with the ruination of our economy.

The choice is clear.

We must stand with Ukraine – not just with words – but with weapons. We need to massively ramp up our military production and – working with our allies – build a military-industrial base that can both supply Ukraine with everything it needs and ensure our forces are well-equipped.

This is a turning point in history, and we must ensure good prevails over evil.

Slava Ukraini!
