Trump regularly goes back on his word and wants to treat U.S. allies as vassals rather than partners.
Speaking to Canadians, Prime Minister Mark Carney explained one of the key reasons Canada walked away from trade talks with the U.S.
Carney noted that the U.S. tried, at the last minute, to restrict Canada’s ability to sign trade deals with other nations:
Carney is right to label such restrictions as unacceptable. Those restrictions would amount to turning Canada into a vassal state, able to make deals with other nations only with the permission of the U.S., while the U.S. would still feel entitled to make whatever deals it wanted for itself. And to introduce such a demand at the last minute is an act of immense bad faith.
Facing such actions, walking away and preserving Canada’s sovereignty was 100% the right move.
