Why is the PM even allowed to ignore a majority of MPs voting for an inquiry and voting for David Johnston to step down? Because Jagmeet Singh lets him get away with it.
There’s absolutely no way around this fundamental truth: Canadian democracy is being dismantled by Justin Trudeau, and Jagmeet Singh is enabling it.
Yesterday, a majority of MPs voted for Trudeau’s hand-picked ‘special rapporteur’ David Johnston to resign.
Weeks ago, a majority of MPs voted for a public inquiry into China’s interference in Canada’s democracy.
In response, Trudeau and Johnston have simply ignored the will of Parliament.
Ironically, both the motion calling for a public inquiry, and the motion calling for Johnston to step down were put forward by the NDP – though the NDP was echoing calls first made by the Conservatives.
In theory, you would think the NDP would take some sort of action after seeing their motions pass and then having Trudeau and Johnston contemptuously ignore them. And, you would think a party with “democratic” in their name would be less than enthused to see the majority of MPs being rendered powerless.
And yet, Justin Trudeau is able to get away with this because of Jagmeet Singh’s weakness.
Singh is either directly complicit in Trudeau’s dismantling of our democracy, or his incompetence is so immense that he appears to be complicit.
Just take a look at this, as Singh makes the insane argument that because there is so little confidence in the electoral system, an election shouldn’t take place now:

In effect, Singh is arguing that the system is so corrupt under the Trudeau Liberals that the Trudeau Liberals need to stay in power.
It’s completely absurd.
Does Singh understand how power works?
Singh has significant potential leverage over the Liberals. Right now, Trudeau has a de facto majority government, because Singh has pledged to keep the Liberals in power until 2025.
If Singh revokes that pledge, the Liberals will truly be a minority government, vulnerable at every turn.
Thus, the threat of revoking that pledge gives Singh power.
If he and the NDP really want a public inquiry into China’s election interference, Singh can threaten to revoke the Liberal-NDP Pact, and Trudeau will be forced to make a choice between an inquiry or losing his de facto majority.
Yet, the one area of leverage Singh has is the one thing he refuses to use. Over and over again, Singh shows immense weakness. In fact, Singh goes out of his way to repeatedly state that he won’t revoke the Liberal-NDP Pact, which immediately removes all pressure on the Liberals and signals to them that they can get away with ignoring the will of Parliament.

So, as our democracy is being dismantled by Justin Trudeau’s contempt for Canadians, Jagmeet Singh is right there with him in bringing down our institutions.
