POLL: Canadians are successfully resisting Russian anti-NATO propaganda, 66% say Canada should send troops if NATO ally attacked

A new Leger poll shows Canadians successfully resisting the anti-NATO narratives that Russia has been seeking to spread in North America and Europe.

Respondents were asked the following question:

“NATO’s article 5 stipulates that an attack on one NATO alliance country should be considered an attack on all members, and any member can be called on to join the fight. If Russia were to invade a NATO alliance member country, such as Poland, would you support or oppose sending Canadian troops to defend that country?”

In response, 66% of Canadians said they would support sending troops. 33% said they strongly support sending troops, and another 33% said they somewhat support sending troops. Just 16% were opposed, 9% somewhat, and 7% strongly.

A majority of respondents in all regions and across all age groups support sending troops. Further, 84% of Liberals, 63% of Conservatives, 73% of New Democrats, 73% of Bloc supporters, and 60% of Greens support sending troops.

While pro-Russia voices may be loud online, the reality is that most Canadians are retaining our sense of ethics and commitment to our allies. Canadians recognize the importance of NATO as an alliance that protects Canada, and Canadians are ready to fulfill our commitments if called upon. This reflects well on the Canadian People, and alongside our increased military spending, shows that we are ready to step up in the event of war.

Ironically, this resolve to meet our commitments reduces the likelihood of war, as it helps deter Russian aggression. So, if you want peace and you want Canada to have a strong place in the world, supporting NATO is simply common sense.

  1. Where will Canada find troops to send? We are facing a severe lack of military people! We don’t have enough to defend our own country

  2. Very encouraging. More of the political aspects of our relationships, alliances and national rearmament would be welcome. The case for national defence, i.e., the likely consequences of not seeing to our interests, needs to be made stronger.
