Carney joins many European leaders in expressing support for Denmark & Greenland amid renewed U.S. threats.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has joined a growing chorus of world leaders in expressing support for Denmark and Greenland, following renewed rhetoric by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his desire to ‘have’ the territory:
“Canada and Denmark are Allies and partners in our shared responsibility for the security and resilience of the Arctic.
As I reaffirmed to PM Frederiksen today, Canada will always support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland. Together, we’ll keep working to secure peace in Ukraine and across Europe.”
The Statsministeriet, the official account of the Danish Prime Minister, issued a statement thanking Canada for the support:
PM Frederiksen: ”Good meeting with PM Carney today. Reaffirmed close bond between our two countries. Discussed security in the Arctic. Expressed my appreciation for Canada’s strong support to the Kingdom of Denmark in the current situation.”
Prime Minister Carney expanded on his initial statement in response to questions from reporters, reaffirming Canada’s position that the future of Greenland is for Denmark and Greenland alone to decide:
In a further expression of Canada’s support, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced she would be travelling to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, to officially open Canada’s consulate there:
“I will be in Nuuk in the coming weeks to officially open Canada’s consulate and mark a concrete step in strengthening our engagement in support of Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including Greenland.”
Carney and other top Canadian officials have been using careful and diplomatic language to express support for Denmark and Greenland, while avoiding any direct criticism of the United States or U.S. President Donald Trump. This is a smart way to handle the situation, as Canada can make its position as a nation clear without picking direct rhetorical battles.
As we seek to preserve the important norm that borders should not be redrawn by force, Canada should continue to stand with Denmark & Greenland and work together with like-minded allies, while also strengthening our own defence capabilities.
