In an impressive speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the ‘rupture’ currently occurring in the world as the rules-based order crumbles, and made an intelligent and heartfelt push for middle powers to stand together to protect themselves and each other.
Amid growing global chaos, Prime Minister Mark Carney received a standing ovation and is garnering significant praise after a deeply impressive speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Prime Minister walked through the rules-based order as it once existed, and how it is now collapsing as hegemonic powers seek to exploit the dependence of middle powers:
“CARNEY: “If great powers abandon even the pretense of rules and values for the unhindered pursuit of their power and interests, the gains from transactionalism will become harder to replicate. Hegemons cannot continually monetize their relationships.”
Without mentioning the United States, Carney clearly referred to the growing threat to Canada and our allies posed by U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that for middle powers, “if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” Carney also reiterated Canada’s principled position in defence of Greenland and Denmark, as well as NATO.
