Why Canada Is Right to Retaliate

Canada is setting an example that can be followed by other countries facing Trump’s coercion.

In response to the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade talks due to last-minute Trump Administration changes, the Canadian Government has announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation to the new 50% tariffs being imposed on a raft of Canadian products.

Here’s what Prime Minister Mark Carney said in his statement on Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs:

“Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.”

While many countries have chosen to accept one-sided U.S. tariffs, such a position has not resulted in better terms for those nations. Trump has simply been emboldened, and now regularly offers ‘deals’ that amount to the U.S. demanding that other countries submit to unfair demands under threat of economic pain. By refusing to allow such coercive threats to dissuade Canada from imposing counter-tariffs, the Canadian Government is sending an important message of strength and making clear that unfair and unethical trade practices are not without consequence.

This is something other countries can emulate, raising the costs of the coercive Trump approach and showing that bullying will be met with resolve.
