The Senators join their Democratic colleagues and a large number of world leaders in speaking out in defence of Denmark and Greenland’s territorial integrity.
With the Trump Administration continuing to talk about seizing Greenland and refusing to rule out the use of military force against a NATO ally, a growing number of Republican Senators are speaking out in an attempt to maintain the taboo against such an action:
As of this being written, eight Republican Senators have publicly expressed their opposition to using force against Greenland:
Susan Collins of Maine, John Curtis of Utah, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell & Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina.
Tillis, in particular, has been quite outspoken on the issue:
Tillis joined one of his Democratic colleagues, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, in calling for the US to defend Denmark’s territorial integrity:
Republican Congressman Don Bacon has also been a vocal voice against the United States taking over Greenland:
Will the taboo hold?
We are watching in real-time an attempt by some in the Trump Administration to break down what seemed like an unshakeable taboo: Democratic nations would not use force to seize territory from each other. It’s even more dramatic than that, given the fact that a violent US seizure of Greenland would involve the US attacking a NATO ally, almost certainly leading to the end of NATO as we know it.
A key factor in whether that taboo – and some semblance of the world order – survives, will be whether Republicans give in to Trump’s desire to seize Greenland, or push back. So far, there is growing pushback from Democratic Senators and Congresspeople, and now a growing number of Republicans. For the sake of a peaceful and stable world, let’s hope that more principled voices will speak out in the days and weeks ahead.
