Mission accomplished?
Conservative MP Jamil Jivani recently concluded his trip to Washington, D.C. Following the trip, Jivani claimed the ‘door was open’ on the U.S. side, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Jivani also used Trump Administration-style rhetoric in an attempt to pin the blame on Canada rather than Trump, despite Trump being the one who unilaterally launched the trade war.
And now, as Trump almost always does with those who try to defend his irrationality, the U.S. President has humiliated his defenders, issuing a new trade threat against Canada, following shortly on the heels of Jivani’s visit:

Of course, Canada owns ‘both sides’ of the Gordie Howe Bridge because Canada paid for it. We paid 100% of the cost to get it built. Once again, Trump shows both his complete disregard for facts and his unwillingness to honour U.S. trade and economic commitments, which further demonstrates that his word counts for nothing and further vindicates Canada’s push for new trade partners.
Notably, Jivani has a long-standing rivalry with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. It’s also notable that Trump specifically targets a bridge in Ontario (an action that threatens further pain for Ontario autoworkers and the broader economy), and criticizes Ontario for Ford’s 100% justified push to remove U.S. alcohol from the shelves. Trump also criticized the Canada-China trade deal, a criticism which has been repeated by Jivani.
Thus, following Jivani’s visit, Trump has launched another economic attack against Canada, and has specifically targeted Ontario, the same province from which Jivani is from. This is why it was such a risk for Canada economically, and the Conservative Party politically, for Jivani to ‘freelance’ and go to Washington. While Trump, not Jivani nor any other Canadian, is responsible for his Administration’s hostility towards Canada, Canadians will see that things are worse off, not better, following Jivani’s attempted intervention. And for the Conservatives, they are now seen as more closely aligned with a foreign Administration that is once again seeking to harm the Canadian People.
