Canada’s patient approach to trade talks vindicated by U.S. Supreme Court ruling

Had Canada rushed to get a deal under tariff pressure, we could find ourselves locked into something far worse than what we currently have, and far worse than what we could get as Trump’s leverage erodes.

Canada’s patient approach to trade talks with the U.S. – an approach based on seeking the best deal for Canada rather than rushing to ‘get a deal’ for the sake of getting a deal – has been vindicated following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling striking down a large portion of Trump’s tariffs.

While some tariffs remain – including on steel and aluminum – Trump has lost the leverage he had sought by using emergency powers to impose tariffs on a whim. This also means that Trump’s preferred trade ‘negotiation’ strategy of threatening to impose tariffs unless others submit to his whims has been weakened. As a result, Canada’s leverage in upcoming CUSMA talks is higher than it otherwise would be.

And this is a vindication of the Canadian Government’s patient approach to trade talks. While some have continued to blame Canada and the Carney Government for ‘failing’ to get a deal, the impediment to trade talks has been Trump’s instability, untrustworthiness, and hostility to the idea of trade itself. Had Canada rushed to get a deal under pressure from Trump ahead of the Supreme Court decision, we would have been in a worse position.

Because the Canadian Government resisted pressure to just take whatever awful deal may have been offered, we are now in a better negotiating position. This is an important moment, as it demonstrates the strength of the Canadian People and Canadian leadership. Even under pressure, our country is standing strong.
