Standing on the right side of history: Canada announces $2 billion in additional military aid for Ukraine, extends operation UNIFIER to 2029, and imposes new sanctions on Russia

Canada will donate over 400 armoured vehicles to Ukraine as it continues to fight for survival.

Canada continues to stand on the right side of history. Today, four years since Russia illegally invaded Ukraine, the Canadian Government reaffirmed support for Ukraine by announcing $2 billion in new military assistance and the extension of operation UNIFIER until 2029. This means Canadian troops will continue to provide training and capacity-building support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Canada will be donating over 400 armoured vehicles, including 383 Roshel Senator Armoured Vehicles and 66 General Dynamics LAV6s.

Canada is also imposing new sanctions on Russia:

“Furthermore, Canada will be imposing sanctions on 21 individuals and 53 entities, as well as 100 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet, under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations. Canada is also lowering its price cap for Russian crude oil from US$47.60 to US$44.10 per barrel.

Canada’s new measures further increase the economic costs on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine by restricting its energy revenues and financial enablers, including cryptocurrency infrastructure, while degrading Russia’s conventional and hybrid military capabilities, including its artificial intelligence ecosystem and drone production.”

With these moves, Canada continues to stand on the right side of history. Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine cannot be allowed to succeed. We cannot and must not accept living in a world where dictators can brutalize other nations and steal territory. Ukraine’s brave and heroic defence can be a turning point in world history, provided that countries like Canada and our allies continue to step up by ensuring Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself, and by keeping up the pressure on Russia.

It is a credit to Canada that we have less political division on supporting Ukraine than many other countries, as can be seen by statements in support of Ukraine issued today by both Prime Minister Mark Carney and Official Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre:

By supporting Ukraine, Canada is making a clear statement about our values and the kind of world we want to live in, and – most importantly – we are supporting the brave Ukrainian People in their righteous fight for freedom.
