POLL: Vast Majority of Canadians Back Prime Minister Carney’s Decision to Walk Away From Trade Talks With U.S.

A majority of Canadians in all provinces and across all age groups back Canada’s move.

A new Angus Reid survey shows Canadians overwhelmingly back Prime Minister Carney’s decision to walk away from trade talks with the U.S.

76% say Canada did the right thing by refusing the terms and ending the negotiations, compared to just 13% who say Canada did the wrong thing, and 11% who say they don’t know.

A majority of Canadians in every province/region polled approve. Support is at 77% in B.C., 67% in Alberta, 65% in Saskatchewan, 72% in Manitoba, 73% in Ontario, 85% in Quebec, and 84% in Atlantic Canada.

69% of Canadians say “Carney showed strength by refusing to accept terms not in Canada’s interest,” compared to 19% who say he “showed poor judgment by allowing negotiations to fail.” 95% of Liberal supporters and 76% of NDP voters say Carney showed strength, while Conservatives are split 43%-43%.

62% say Canada imposing dollar-for-dollar tariffs is “about right under the circumstances,” while 16% say Canada should retaliate more strongly, and 12% say Canada should reduce retaliatory measures.

The survey indicates that Canadians are fed up with the constant threats and economic attacks from the Trump Administration, and stand with Prime Minister Carney in taking a stand for Canadian sovereignty.
