The procurement of 1000 tanks and 2,500 armoured vehicles is being considered as part of an effort to deter Russian aggression.
Germany is considering a massive order of tanks and armoured vehicles.
First reported by Bloomberg, the order would cost $29.4 billion USD and would amount to 1,000 Leopard 2 main battle tanks, and 2,500 GTK Boxer armoured vehicles, both of which are made and designed in Germany.
The procurement would be aimed at equipping as many as seven new brigades over the next decade.
Such a large purchase of tanks and armoured vehicles would demonstrate Germany’s commitment to rearmament, while also providing significant stimulus to a struggling German economy.
This is also an example of why having a strong domestic defence industry is so important. Germany is able to direct government rearmament funds into domestic job creation because it has companies that design and build tanks and armoured vehicles.
This also gives Germany an added layer of resiliency in the event of a large-scale conflict, as they can produce much of what they need at home.
While Canada is unlikely to be designing tanks anytime soon, German firms have been willing to build factories in other nations, meaning Canada could conceivably build tanks here. And when it comes to armoured vehicles, Canadian company Roshel should be given expanded contracts so they can expand hiring and production, as well as equip the CAF with military vehicles that have proven themselves in Ukraine.
Slowly but surely – far too slowly still – free nations are starting to put their immense economic power towards rearmament. Canada must be a part of this process, and we should start placing our own massive military orders.
