WATCH: Asked about Carney’s deal with China, Trump says “that’s what he should be doing”

“If Carney can get a deal with China, he should do that,” said the U.S. President.

U.S. President Donald Trump was asked about the new Canada-China trade deal brokered by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. After a question from a reporter, Trump appeared unconcerned, saying, “That’s what he should be doing.” You can view his full response below:

“JUST IN – TRUMP ON CANADA-CHINA TRADE DEAL: IF CARNEY CAN GET A DEAL WITH CHINA, HE SHOULD DO THAT”

Trump’s remarks are different from the tone taken by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who called it “problematic”:

“U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer criticized Canada’s decision to allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles at a low tariff rate, calling the move “problematic” in comments made to CNBC on Thursday.

“I think it’s problematic for Canada,” Greer said. “There’s a reason why we don’t sell a lot of Chinese cars in the United States. It’s because we have tariffs to protect American auto workers and Americans from those vehicles.”

Despite these divergent messages, Canada’s leverage is increased by signing new trade deals. Instead of waiting to see what the U.S. will do, Canada is at least taking action to broaden our trade partnerships.
