70% of Canadians hold an unfavourable view of the United States.
A new EKOS survey shows the U.S. with both a higher unfavourability rating than China and a worse net favourability rating. According to the poll, 70% of Canadians view the U.S. unfavourably, compared to 20% who view it favourably. 63% view China unfavourably, compared to 14% who view it favourably. That gives China a net favourability of -49, compared to -50 for the United States.
By contrast, 58% have a favourable view of Ukraine, 55% have a favourable view of Mexico, 66% have a favourable view of the United Kingdom, and 64% have a favourable view of France.
Canadian politicians – particularly those who are criticizing Canada’s recent deal with China while simultaneously trying to blame the Canadian government for Donald Trump’s hostility to trade with Canada – would be wise to keep these poll numbers in mind. Trump’s actions and rhetoric toward Canada have made the United States incredibly unpopular in this country.
