That money would be better spent on Canadian rearmament.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has been invited to join U.S. President Donald Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’, and accepting the invite may come at a high price:
“Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says while he’s accepted Donald Trump’s invitation on principle to join the president’s “Board of Peace” to oversee next steps in Gaza, it’s just unclear now what the $1 billion permanent membership fee is for.
“The president raised it with me a few weeks ago,” he told reporters in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, adding he has yet to absorb all its details including how the Trump-led initiative will be structured and how financing would work.”
If Carney can join for free and in so doing stabilize Canada-US relations (though any such stabilizing seems impossible given Trump’s unpredictability), it may be worth doing. However, under no circumstances should Canadian taxpayer dollars be given to the ‘Board of Peace’. That money would be far better spent on Canadian rearmament to bolster our defences in the Arctic, ramp up domestic production of drones and artillery, and renovate/rebuild military housing.
So far, the government is stating that there is no plan to spend money on joining, nor has the U.S. requested it. If that changes, and if joining the board becomes contingent on paying $1 billion, Canada must say ‘no’.
