In despicable remarks, Trump falsely claims NATO troops in Afghanistan stayed “off the front lines”

158 Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan, alongside many NATO allies who answered the call after the United States was attacked. Trump’s disgusting remarks show contempt for their sacrifice.

Just when you think Donald Trump can’t sink any lower, another day brings another despicable remark.

Speaking to a reporter about NATO, the U.S. President falsely claimed the U.S. “never needed” NATO, and falsely claimed that allied troops in Afghanistan “stayed a little back, off the front lines.”

“Trump on NATO: “I’ve always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That’s really the ultimate test. I’m not sure of that. We’ve never needed them. They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines.”

Trump’s remarks are not only false, but they are also despicable. 158 Canadians lost their lives in Afghanistan, alongside 457 people from the United Kingdom, 90 people from France, 62 people from Germany, 53 people from Italy, 43 people from Denmark, and many others from nations that answered the call to support the U.S. In fact, Denmark lost 7.82 people per one million, just below the U.S. loss of 7.96 people per one million. Canada’s losses were also on the higher end proportionally, with 4.68 people lost per 1 million. Displaying those numbers is not about some sort of cold statistical analysis, but rather to highlight that many nations made significant sacrifices to help the United States.

Understandably, the U.S. President’s remarks have generated fully justified outrage:

As I said on Twitter, to support Trump as a Canadian at this point means opposing the brave men and women who defend our country:
