Critics of the Canadian government have repeatedly called for a zero-tariff deal and blamed Canada for not getting one. Yet again, we see the truth that it’s the Trump Administration – not Canada – standing in the way of such a deal.
Testifying before the U.S. Senate, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent once again confirmed that the U.S. – not Canada – is standing in the way of removing tariffs. When asked by Republican Senator John Kennedy whether the U.S. would accept a zero-tariff deal, Bessent said, “absolutely not.”
Let this be a reminder to those who continue to blame Canada for the actions of the Trump Administration. It’s not Canada’s fault that there is no ‘deal.’ Trump wants to impose tariffs, and the U.S. political system has ceded its authority to him, thus allowing the imposition of tariffs on a whim. It’s time to stop blaming Canada and Canadians, start speaking the truth about the hostile trade actions of the Trump Administration, and continue efforts to diversify our trade.
